Melanie Dahling

http://www.girlabouttown.ca/
Melanie Dahling is a comedian (performer in “Winnipeg Comedy Festival” 2012), actor (“Planet Echo”, “Todd and the Book of Pure Evil” and numerous fringe productions), writer and sometimes singer/songwriter living in Winnipeg Manitoba. She runs a personal blog where she mostly talks about her attempt at being a grown up/talking to boys. Melanie was tired of being told she was “over-thinking things” when she examined the world around her from a feminist point of view, so she started this site and is excited to see where it goes.

My paintings focus on the impersonal methods of creating objects in consumer culture against the personal quality of mark making. Sculptural pieces made entirely out of paint question the separation of representation and abstraction, as paint becomes a physical object removed from its usual spot on the canvas. These brushstrokes are then used to create layered prints where photocopiers and printers do the painting for me. Using a machine I remove myself from the work, distancing myself from the creation of something considered personal.
I am also focused on the ways brushstrokes and paint drips became an icon through the history of abstraction of an expression of an individual. These one of a kind symbols are multiplied, reused and manipulated through the photocopier. The process of reworking my own mark making reveals the way an individual can be manipulated just like a mass-produced object. In this way I become part of an assembly line moving back and forth between myself and the machine as well as between a representation of something abstract and the creation of an abstract image.

Candace Propp

Candace Propp is a Winnipeg based mixed-media artist who incorporates cast paper, found objects, image transfers and more into her drawing and painting to achieve a highly textural and 3-dimensional quality. Her work portrays our connection and disconnection to one’s natural self, often reflecting the values and principles of her Yoga spiritual learning. Candace has taught at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, is currently being mentored through MAWA and has had her work featured through many solo exhibitions. www.mts.net/~cpropp/

Joshua Pearlman

As the exploration of questions is the common ancestor to both artistic and scientific processes, I am currently developing my practice toward the integration of these two approaches. Although the questions posed by each show fundamental similarities, a history of academic isolation from one another has promoted a divergence in the vocabularies with which these questions are explored. Integrating these vocabularies serves to broaden the surface area upon which exploration can occur. This concept, and an education in evolutionary biology, has inspired the current focus of my practice toward exploring questions of identity and the shifting boundaries between organism and environment. In my practice I create and document pseudo-biological entities that illustrate parallels between questions of identity explored through the arts and humanities and those explored through the chemical and biological sciences.
